Jesus said, "Blessed are the poor in spirit, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven" (Matthew 5:3). The poor in spirit are those who know they caused Jesus to suffer and are turning to Him in repentance, accountable before Him and without excuse. They know they have no capacity in themselves to be righteous, but wait on Him in patient hope, trusting in His word and His life to live.
